Thunder Bay, Ontario is on the western shore of Lake Superior. Grain from the Canadian prairies is collected by rail and brought to the grain terminals where the grain is stored until picked up by lake ships or "lakers". The lake shipping season is only in the summer and fall as the lakes freeze in the winter, as seen in this image.
